You’re invited to “A 100 Year Design Mistake - Why African Design Is About To Change Everything” a presentation and discussion between Peet Pienaar, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Mami Wata, and Silas Munroe, Assistant Professor in Communication Arts / Graduate Graphic Design at Otis College of Art and Design, and Faculty in the MFA Program in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

An evening that should itself be exciting, important and inspiring.

SILAS MUNRO

Silas Munro is a partner of Polymode, a studio that leads the edge of contemporary graphic design for clients in the cultural sphere. He is a Founding Faculty at the MFA in Graphic Design at VCFA and a contributor to W. E. B. Du Bois's Data Portraits: Visualizing Black America. Munro coauthored the first BIPOC-centered design history course, Black Design in America: African Americans and the African Diaspora in Graphic Design 19–21st Century, releasing in book form in 2023.

PEET PIENAAR

Peet Pienaar is known for his extensive research in design in Africa, and his significant involvement in the development of creating alternative visions in a decolonised design world.

He is a South African designer with a background in contemporary art, creative director and co-founder of Mami Wata surf. He has a BFA in Fine Arts from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Through the Mami Wata Surf brand he researches, documents and publishes African design principals from different parts of the continent. Practically implements decolonised ideas into the brand and builds a network of design on the continent and beyond.

Peet has done work for NY Times, MTV, Comme des Garcon, Camper and Bos Iced tea. His design work has been included in many international collections including The Smithsonian Institution, Washington,  the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Museum of Design, Zurich and the South African National Gallery, Cape Town.
